Overcoming Doubt: How to Select the Right Equipment for Your Dental Practice
You know the feeling of self-doubt when you are thinking about those high-ticket purchases you need for your dental office: “I’m going to be using this equipment for a long time.” “If I make the wrong choice – I’ll either be stuck with it, or I’ll have to come up with a new outlay of cash or increase my debt.” “It looks like it will fit into my space – but what if it’s simply too cumbersome for me and my staff to use?”
If you’ve just started your own practice, it’s especially important to make smart decisions – and if you’re new at this, it’s important to get some help! Here are some of the key factors that go into dental equipment purchase decision-making:
Budget Considerations & Business Priorities
Make sure your budget is crystal clear BEFORE you start your dream equipment list. Avoid buyer’s remorse by understanding what you are buying, the finance terms, and what your recourse is if you are unhappy with your purchase.
Next, get clear on your priorities. Yes, that swanky new autoclave is the Bentley of dental equipment – but is it really the best way to serve your patients and boost your business? Write down and answers these questions before making any major purchase:
- Is this the best piece of equipment for my patients? If it’s a chair, for example, will they be comfortable sitting in it? Be sure to do everything you can to experience the equipment from your patient’s perspective before you decide to buy.
- Is this equipment going to be easy and comfortable for my staff? As you well know, you are all spending hours each day hunched over your patients. Again, experience everything from your hygienists’ and assistants’ perspectives, as well as your own, to make sure the equipment meets everyone’s needs.
- What is the quality of the equipment? Budget equipment often means budget-busting repairs or replacement. Many manufacturers offer tours for dentists considering their equipment, so you can actually see what goes into making it.
- Need or want? Remember, the Bentley doesn’t actually get you from here to there any faster – the speed limit is still the same. Do you really need all those flashy features? Are those features actually going to make it more difficult for your staff to learn the equipment? If you won’t really use it in daily practice – you probably don’t need it.
You also need to think about what your equipment will attract – and what it will deter. Will the best hygienists and assistants want to come work for you if you are buying equipment that doesn’t help them do their jobs? By the same token, will an uncomfortable budget chair turn off patients? Or will having the most up-to-date technology attract both staff and patients – bringing you additional income and the possibility of business expansion?
